Volvo Cars in China uses Honeywell's ultra-low GWP HFO-1234yf refrigerant, which has a 99.9% lower GWP than HFC refrigerants

It meets the requirements of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol to strengthen the control of non-CO2 greenhouse gases such as HFCs, helping to achieve the "double carbon" goal.

SHANGHAI, July 11, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) today announced that Volvo Cars has adopted Honeywell's ultra-low GWP HFO-1234yf refrigerant in China.1 This partnership marks Volvo Cars as one of the first automotive companies to use HFO-1234yf in the Chinese market. By partnering with Volvo Cars, Honeywell is committed to further providing Chinese car owners with a lower carbon and safer driving environment, contributing to the sustainable development of the Chinese automotive market and the achievement of China's "double carbon" goal.

HFO-1234yf is an ultra-low GWP refrigerant for automotive air conditioning systems and is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO). Compared to HFC refrigerants currently used in the domestic market, HFO-1234yf has a GWP reduction of 99.9%2 and helps automotive manufacturers to meet the increasingly stringent regulatory requirements for automotive air conditioning refrigerants. It is proven in automotive design, engineering and service. By the end of 2021, HFO-1234yf refrigerant is already used in more than 120 million vehicles worldwide.

"HFO-1234yf has become a trusted choice for an increasing number of partners worldwide as an ultra-low GWP refrigerant for automotive air conditioning systems. With the entry into force of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol in China, it has become a trend for the automotive industry in China to strengthen the control of non-CO2 greenhouse gases such as HFCs in response to the 'double carbon' target." Mao-Shu Liu, vice president and general manager of Honeywell's Specialty Materials and Technologies Group in Asia Pacific, said, "Approximately 60 per cent of Honeywell's new product development starts with the goal of improving our customers' environmental performance and social benefits, and we are committed to contributing to the sustainable development of the automotive industry through a range of proven technologies."

Honeywell has been working on HFO-1234yf refrigerant heat pump systems and thermal management systems for electric vehicles for many years, and has done extensive advanced work in all aspects of innovative system design, component configuration and refrigerant to improve system performance and efficiency, and reduce costs and complexity, making HFO-1234yf refrigerant easily available for use in electric vehicle thermal management systems in China and around the world.

Honeywell's groundbreaking HFO technology helps customers reduce their carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency without compromising end-product performance, and the company has invested US$1 billion in research and development and capacity expansion for this technology. equivalent to reducing the potential emissions of more than 56 million vehicles over a full year.

Honeywell is committed to achieving carbon neutrality targets for all its operations and facilities by 2035.
